In a world where musical theatre has made massive strides into the pop-culture spotlight with major films like Wonka (2024) and Wicked (2024), alongside major franchises, like Harry Potter, choosing the musical theatre route to continue story lines, it is interesting to analyze religious contexts within musical theatre, and how this use of religion has both brought communities together, as well as driving them apart. This website will examine how religion is portrayed in musical theatre in a couple of different ways. First, we will use the work of Henry Bial to understand how secular theatre artists use religious texts—specifically the Bible— in the service of the theatrical endeavour. Then, we will examine satirical commentary on religion in musical theatre and the backlash it has received from religious communities. To analyze the examples within these categories, I will be referencing live productions that I have personally seen, along with official recordings of other performances. Where none of those are available, film adaptations will be used for analysis.
